MOLECULE

Escentric Molecules // owes its existence to an aroma-molecule that does not exist in nature. Iso E Super was created in a laboratory at IFF in 1973. It remained unknown outside the world of perfumery until the launch of Escentric Molecules, though its elusive presence hovers at relatively low concentrations in the background of many fragrances for both men + women. Among perfumers, it is prized for its velvety, cocooning effect.

Perfumer Geza Schoen has a reputation as a rebel in the fragrance world. His proposal for a bold creation of two fragrances in homage to their enigmatic attractant. One fragrance would contain an unprecedented 65% of the molecule. The rest of the formula would consist of ingredients designed to underscore its low-lit mood.

Escentric Molecule 03 celebrates Vetiveryl Acetate, a hybrid of natural root + synthetic.Vetiveryl Acetate could be described as a hybrid molecule, half-natural, half-synthetic. It is a fraction of vetiver oil, distilled from the roots of an Indian grass, which is then ‘crossed’ with acetic acid to remove the bitter and leathery aspects of the root.

The result is an elegant and refined molecule with the woody, slightly grassy character of vetiver, but far smoother and softer. “Acetylation also brings out the grapefruit touch in vetiver,” says perfumer Geza Schoen, “giving a more pronounced bitter-fresh top note.”
